Poem
for June
WORDS
Words, I have loved you, love you still,
Never abused or used you ill.
You have been my constant friend.
Words, stay with me to the end.
Keep your sound within my reach;
Let no stroke impede my speech;
Give me sight to read the page.
Don’t desert me in old age.
Words, sit lightly on my tongue;
Let me not have to seek you long,
Nor lapse of memory intervene
In saying what I really mean.
If you and I together stay
I will not waste the passing day.
It is in you my thoughts unfold.
Words, be with me when I’m old.
